Fig. 29: Charleville Hotel, Massoori (India). Mussoorie had a reputation for leisure unfettered by official censure, in contrast to Simla which was much more restrained by bureaucratic protocol. An army medical officer recalled at the turn of the century that the hotel rang a (warning) bell at 6 a.m. to alert residents to return to their rooms, presumably after an evening of debauchery, to avoid scandal.
