The foundation stone of the Nalla Pochamma shrine located in one of the bylanes of Tarnaka. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of a Member of Parliament, an MLA and some other prominent leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Even though the TDP under N. Chandrababu Naidu streamlined roads and constructions in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, their cadre often supported such road-side shrines. This often resulted in an interesting dialectic, which forced the state government to bring s
The temple is dedicated to Nalla Pochamma. Though the temple does not encroach on to the road, it is situated adjacent to government land in a lane in Tarnaka. This temple is defunct, yet it prominently displays (on the far wall in the photograph) the black foundation stone laid by a Member of Parliament in presence of the local leaders. This compound houses three shrines dedicated to Ujjaini Mahankali, Maremma, and Maisamma. The complex is located in Osmania University. The courtyard was fenced recently. The colours used on the boundary wall are white, yellow, and red, the hues normally associated with these goddesses. Yellow symbolizes turmeric and red signifies blood. All three shrines are painted in red and yellow. Digital Photograph, Alice Samson, Hyderabad, 2008.
Dedicated to Nalla Pochamma, this temple is located on railway premises at Lalapet, Secunderabad. There is also a Sufi shrine in the same complex. Known for her volatile temper, Nalla Pochamma is supposed to be more powerful than any other goddess. This painting in the calendar art style shows the goddess riding a tiger and trampling a male figure. The legend is that the goddess defeated her father Shiva in a battle and trampled him. While the details of her battle with Shiva vary, the story
At this nondescript shrine next to a tree, a Shiva linga appears next to the icon of the mother- goddess resting on a pedestal that is said to represent her brother Pothuraju. This shrine is located in Osmania University. Digital Photograph, Joe Christopher, Hyderabad, 2009.
One of many nondescript shrines located in the busy intersection near the Secunderabad railway station. The shrine is an island in the sea of traffic. Digital Photograph, Alice Samson, Hyderabad, 2009.
There are plenty of shrines like these around the city. Given the absence of explanatory boards or inscriptions, it is very difficult to know to which goddess the shrine is dedicated. On the either side of the entrance of the shrine, images of Pothuraju brandishing a whip are drawn or painted. These shrines are always painted red and yellow. Red stands for kumkum, and yellow for pasupu or turmeric. This shrine is located in Osmania University. Digital Photograph, Alice Samson, Hyderabad, 2008
