Patricia Uberoi was formerly Professor of Sociology at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi, and is currently Honorary Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi. Along with her husband, sociologist J.P.S. Uberoi, she has been collecting Indian calendar art since the mid-1960s. She is among the pioneers of academic writing on this form of popular print culture, with numerous essays on the theme of nation-building, and on the representation of women (and goddesses), children, and Sikh communitarian identity. Recently, she has become interested in the transnational migration of images, especially through the Asian region.
An exhibition under the title From Goddess to Pin-up: Femininity in Indian Calendar Art (curated with Pooja Sood) has been exhibited in museums and galleries in New Delhi, Bangalore, Fremantle, Sydney, Mumbai, Melbourne, Chandigarh, Fukuoka, Vienna, Amsterdam, New York and Vancouver, while a second exhibition, entitled Baby Boom, has been shown in New Delhi. A catalogue of the former exhibition, including an essay on the making of the Uberoi Collection of Calendar Art, has been published by the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (2000).
Dr. Uberoi’s latest book, Freedom and Destiny: Family, Gender and Popular Culture in India (Oxford University Press, 2006) explores themes of family and gender in Indian calendar art, popular cinema and romance fiction.
