Ruqayya Y Khan is associate professor of religion at Claremont Graduate University. She has been examining the Majnun Layla story for over a decade now with increasing attention to its visual and performative aspects in various contexts. She is completing a book manuscript analyzing sexuality, gender and specifically, constructs of masculinity, in the ‘Abbasid-era rendition of Majnun Layla in the Kitab al-Aghani (Book of Songs). In addition, she plans to collect and evaluate the relevant visual data for her a book project on the museum material concerning this ancient Islamic love story of Majnun Layla. This subsequent book project takes up the topic of Museums and Majnun Layla and aims to study issues of representation by paying attention to memory, identity and language in modes of curatorship and exhibition.
