Frank J. Korom is a professor of religion & anthropology at Boston University. He has been following the Bengali Patuas for more than a decade now. His research on them thus far has resulted in an exhibition that he curated titled Village of Painters: Narrative Scrolls from West Bengal, which ran at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe from 2006-2007. The Museum of New Mexico Press concurrently published his accompanying book with the same title. Since then, he continues to collect materials for a second book on the Patuas that will focus more closely on the poetics of the tradition and how aesthetics reflects social change, such as the impact of globalization and the concomitant fetishism of their work.
